Sustainable Tourism is Luxurious Here

Before launching Wonderful Escapes, I spent 30 years in retail, focusing on efficiency and eco-friendliness. We did our best, but achieving a circular economy in fashion is challenging, but it’s entirely feasible here at Wern-y-Cwm. This is what we are doing to combat the climate emergency, none of them are rocket science, but they do represent my mum’s saying which has been my life’s mantra; “Waste not, want not”. She might have been saying this since the war, but it's becoming all the more important as new World Leaders turn a blind eye. Mad but true!
Water
- We have our own freshwater system, treated with UV purification, and discourage bottled water.
- Our natural swimming pool uses aquaponic plants for chemical-free cleaning.
- We employ water-saving devices and collect rainwater for irrigation.
Waste
- Composting all raw food waste enriches our gardens.
- We use local horse manure for fertilization.
- Recycling is sorted meticulously, with minimal waste generated.
- Food waste is eliminated through careful menu planning.
- Pet waste is composted rather than bagged.
- Habitat piles are created from fallen branches and timber.

Energy
- Our properties are heated by ground and air source systems.
- Solar panels are installed on the buildings which are not Grade II listed.
- Firewood comes from our fallen trees and collected kindling.
Supply Chain
- We prioritize sourcing food within a 10-mile radius, supporting local producers.
- Local artisans upcycle and restore furniture from second-hand materials.
- We source building materials from local reclamation yards.
- You may even pick your own fruit, herbs and veg in season from our gardens.
- We use Free-cycle to repurpose items reaching the end of their life.
Travel
- Cyclists are welcome, with bike repair equipment available.
- We can give you a lift to the station which is only 5 miles away where possible.
- Our EV charging point means no range anxiety if you come by electric car
Our décor, both in the houses and across the gardens reflects our quirky creativity, turning one person’s rubbish into our treasure. For instance, old tin roofing becomes fun fencing and the rusty farrows found in the barn are now its chandeliers. The farm had generations of junk in the outbuildings and a centuries-old dump, most of which we have mined and turned into sculptures, water features and decorations.
We are great customers for Daren, a fabulous local demolition man. The materials from an old chapel in the valleys have been repurposed, with pews for our Treatment Room walls and patinated cladding from the roof, lining the walls and columns on our amphitheater.
All in all Wonderful Escapes, at Wern-y-Cwm Farm offers you the perfect option for a guilt-free, low carbon holiday, business or wellness retreat.
